In thinking about the trouble simmering between Ukraine and Russia, I was reminded of a book I read a couple of years ago called, The Unknown Black Book. I think it’s imperative that everyone read this book.
Russia was responsible for the genocide in the Ukraine in the 1930s, and took part in the Holocaust during World War Two. Many Russians did not know who were safer–the Red Army or the Germans. So it’s no surprise when a story broke in USA Today that a leaflet was distributed to all Jews in Donetsk, Ukraine ordering Jews to register themselves and their property by militants loyal to Russia. The Ukraine government is investigating those leaflets.
Meanwhile, please read this book. The first printing of this book was a censored copy that did not include the diaries and letters of Holocaust sufferers which accused Russia of being a part of it. It wasn’t until Gorbachev released the rest of the letters and diaries to the Jewish committee who put the book together that the second printing came out called, The Unknown Black Book.
Read your history, or be doomed to repeat it.
